I always like looking at older Toy Fair catalogs as they tend to have many preproduction items shown. The Death Star Escape playset was no exception. The toy shown appears to be an early conceptual design made from Kenner's model shop.

When compared to the production toy, almost every piece is completely resculpted including the laser cannon.

While the production box appeared to have a more accurate model, there are still some differences...

The cannon is closer in design, but still has some significant differences. The upper beam appears to have joints in different locations. The figure pads lack pegs and the removeable bridge deco is completely different.
